Nail Arts Bloggers Unite

I don't know her personally. I just saw her face on my Facebook newsfeed last week when a friend posted about the sad news. Ayana Grace, my daughter who is a nail arts lover, asked me today something about blog link ups and as we exchanged thoughts about the topic, she opened a blog post that features about how bloggers unite in tribute to this very popular girl who has become a You Tube makeup guru sensation and CoverGirl's Honorary Model.

Talia Joy Castellano is her name. And just today, I read that this beautiful and talented girl from Orlando, Florida, who has fought with cancer since she was 7 years old, passed away at age 13 last week, July 16, 2013.
"...diagnosed with stage-four neuroblastoma when she was just 7 years old,
started using makeup 'as a wig' shortly after she found out she was sick.
In July 2011, she began filming makeup tutorials in her bedroom —
short, how-to videos for the glam, colorful looks she invented.
Within months, she had hundreds of thousands of subscribers
and millions of views on her more than 150 YouTube clips."

Both make-up and nail arts lovers around the world grieve at this inspirational and talented girl's demise that Nicole of Nail Polish Wars announced in Facebook a blog link up she initiated in honor of Talia Joy. In this tribute, bloggers unite to express their love and sympathy for Talia Joy and her family by posting about mint manis to remember her by using the last mint mani photo she uploaded in Instagram.

I'm not really into nail arts (my daughter, Ayana, is!) but I've been pinning some nail arts photos and blogs into my Beauty Pinterest Board. When I saw all the mint manis that were linked up so far, I suddenly felt this strong urge to break away from my usual crafts and food features to make a post on this.

Here's a snap shot of the links in one of the sites I visited.

Browsing and reading about Talia Joy led me to TV Week's article featuring the video clip below on how Talia Joy answered Ellen Degeneres, when during the show, she was asked how she managed to stay positive in the face of cancer:
"...the young girl gave a bubbly reply:  'When people ask me that,
I’m [like], what do you want me to do, be depressed?' she said.
'A little fishy told me, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming,"
referring to the catch phrase of DeGeneres' ... inspiring fish Dory
from the Disney-Pixar film 'Finding Nemo.' "

Be inspired by the life of Talia Joy. We will surely remember her each time we watch Finding Nemo!  Hope you enjoyed your weekend, friends!

  1. Hey there! Thanks so much for the shout out. I wish Talia could see our manis for her - though something tells me she can, and is smiling. Hugs to you and your daughter x

Pesto Spanish Sardines Pasta: A Remake

There's a saying that goes, "One is enough, two is too much..." Uh uhhh, not for this!!! I'm referring to the Spanish Sardines Pasta which was my welcome post this year. My daughter, Ayana Grace, bought a bottle of pesto from the grocery store last month (she usually does...we seldom run out of pesto sauce in our cupboard) and I just wasn't able to resist making another try of the Pesto Spanish Sardines Pasta so here it is... Ingredients: 2 tbsps reserved oil from bottled sardines 2 tbsps olive oil 1 tbsp minced garlic 1/4 cup diced tomato 1 cup flaked Spanish sardines 1/3 cup Pesto sauce 1/4 cup pitted black olives 1/4 cup button mushrooms 1/2 kilo pasta noodles, cooked according to package instructions salt and pepper to taste Whole pieces of Spanish sardines (1 piece as topping per serving) Parsley for garnish   Steps: In a large saute pan, heat oil from sardines. Add olive oil as needed. Saute garlic until fragrant. Add diced

Ensaladang Mustasa

It's back to work today, after five days of rest, something I've been looking forward to. As if the  long Christmas holiday vacation was not enough :) Well, days just seem to fly so fast! Thanks to the additional non-working holidays brought about by the Pope's visit to my country, the Philippines. I had time to relax, stay at home, bond with family and yes, sort picture files in my computer. In between social networking, of course, I cooked for my family. With my husband home, there has to be fish and vegetables on the dining table. There was a bunch of mustasa (mustard) leaves left in the vegetable bin. What could be a better and perfect partner to fried fish than Ensaladang Mustasa (Mustard Salad)? Very simple and easy, here's how I did it. Ingredients: 1 bunch of mustasa leaves Rock salt 2 medium-sized tomatoes, sliced 1 small onion, sliced thinly 3 tbsps vinegar Iodized salt, ground pepper and sugar to taste Steps: 1. Cut mus

Ensaladang Alugbati (Malabar Spinach Salad)

This post appeared in my Facebook memories today. I'm glad it did! I featured this salad in my FB page a year ago.  Alugbati  (Malabar Spinach)  Salad (Ensaladang Alugbati). This came up when I received for the first time this bouquet of alugbati from Erik, my officemate. He shares with us fruits and veggies fresh from his garden.
